We had a child here for two years and were utterly dismayed. The level of education was abysmal and the teaching methods relied on an untested model designed by the principal. Toilets were locked to prevent vaping which meant students often did not have access during school time, this illustrates the mistrustful and disrespectful relationship between staff and students. Many families moved out of the area for the sake of their children’s education. Do NOT recommend.
Hopefully I will become head student next year and change it abit by getting other students and teachers involved with activities. I also want to start a fundraiser for breest cancer, I hope to make learning fun and school amazing instead of the leaking classrooms due to the government not building the new school ( Its all finished with the designs and how much it will cost ) Make Ellesmere college great again
My year 8 enjoys going to school everyday (winning !!). He tells me about his projects in his connected learning modules and I can see him becoming more organised in his time management. Staff have always been approachable and only too happy to answer all my questions. I’m pleased the teachers organise lots of sports for the students.
Fantastic leadership! Connected Learning modules are fun and engaging. Students love all the events and productions the school gets involved with.
All of my children loved going here would happily send our grandchildren here when they are older!
My children were scared to start a College and were not sure it would be the right fit. Our family was pleasantly surprised at how many activities and events are available for students and how engaging the lessons are.
My children were pushed academically and musically which I have loved. They always come home from school with heaps of positive comments to share and stories of what they learnt! A big well done to all the staff there!!
A happy school environment with quality teachers who clearly care about their students. I have been to 3 different high schools and this was by far the best and most accepting of people from different cultures and backgrounds.
My children have both learned so much and grown in confidence from attending Ellesmere. They are always happy and are able to explain their learning to me. I wasn't sure how they would settle in being anxious children, but the teaching staff are good at making them feel comfortable and involved. Recommend!
I have done my last 5 years at Ellesmere and love everything about it! The teachers care so much about their students and always go the extra mile to support us. I am not from New Zealand but have always felt accepted here and valued. My English has improved and I am grateful to Ellesmere.
This is a good school but some students (and parents) try to run it down. Teachers go out of their way to help students and are approachable and helpful. There are heaps of activities everyday, clubs and sports. I have been involved in lots and have learned lots.
I have had 4 children go through this school (all who were very different) and have all gone on to be highly successful at university, polytech and apprenticeships. The College provided them with a strong academic and skills foundation for them to go onto the next part of their career journies. Staff went out of their way to support them. The Gateways programme was awesome as was the Rural Trades Academy. I cannot say enough positive things about the College.
This is one of the most innovative schools that I have ever worked at, and one of the most progressive and innovative schools in New Zealand. Staff work incredibly hard to plan engaging topics and lessons for students. Students have a huge amount of choice within Ako and Connected Learning Modules in the junior school. NCEA Level 1 was removed to decrease the workload and stress of students and to allow greater flexibility and choice for students through semesterised modules being implemented in 2024. Despite there only being small numbers of students in the senior school, a broad range of subjects is on offer with small numbers in classes. Staff care for their students as individuals and care about their learning. Students are being upskilled on how to self-manage their learning more, with their learning being presented to the community at termly "Exhibition Evenings". Students have LOTS of opportunities to get involved in school through leadership, sport, arts, cultural activities, inter-whanau competitions...the list goes on and on! There is always something positive available for students to be involved in if they wish to do so. Staff spend a huge amount of time developing strong, positive relationships with students. Yes, the school is rundown, but that is outside the control of the staff as a whole school rebuild is planned by the Ministry of Education, starting in late 2023. The vast majority of students are AMAZING, however, just like every other school there are the small few who let others down. A huge amount of positive change has occurred at the College over the past 5 years.
