The teachers are kind and all was help. The girls are lovely I learnt so many new things I would have never learnt at my old school I was there for four years and loved every minute of it all the teachers I had were so kind to me and all was made me feel welcome I loved it and wish I could go back.
My daughter went briefly to this school in 2023 and I read these reviews before we enrolled at Selwyn House School. These reviews almost changed my mind in enrolling her. However we took the plunge, met the enrolment officer and principal through virtual team meetings, flew to Christchurch, and she stayed overnight at the school for a boarding experience.
This is our experience. We could not fault the school. If you are after a school that wholeheartedly embraces their students through an excellent school curriculum and encourages their girls to be the best they can be, in a program that challenges them to be the best they can academically be, without falling short of being a decent human being.. then you have found the place. Yes, there will be differences within the students.. some love horses, others love chickens. Some don't like animals but love art and anime. Either way... the girls find a common thread amongst themselves and they thrive here. Our daughter thrived here. She would still be there if she were not moving overseas to be with us. The communication updates through the Hero App, being able to see photos of her while participating in plays, markets, sports, music while we are stuck overseas is priceless. Being able to communicate with the boarding house staff for any questions and having our minds put at ease by the warmth, care and attention they have for their boarding students. Again priceless.
The communication with the enrolment team has been spot on, nothing was a problem. The teachers are seriously amazing. The girls were encouraged to challenge, think outside the box, grow emotionally, ask the questions, provide the answers, find solutions without fear of reprisal. Any concerns we may have had were instantly put at ease. Racism does not raise its ugly head in this school. The girls don't have access or time to experience cyber bullying. Phones are handed in at night after family telephone time. Routines are well communicated, adhered to and not so strict so they instantly become a comfortable routine. Therefore the routines become second nature during school holidays, resulting in an easy transition back to school. This school is excellent. If you are thinking of enrolling your child, of course do your due diligence. However she will be well looked after, boarding can be hard for children. At Selwyn they have the care and attention and tools in place for a child to succeed emotionally and academically. We do not regret our decision at all. Jen and Matt Whitten
I was badly bullied and the school did nothing about it. The richer students always became teacher favorites and 80% of the student were stuck up pricks. Everyone was either bullied or a bully. Money equaled social status from as soon as you joined the school and as I was on a scholarship, I was at the bottom rung. Teachers didn't accommodate students and taught everyone pretty much the same thing regardless of their level and didn't even have extension worksheet! I learnt near to nothing in my three years there. Would not recommend. IT was only manageable because I found a few actually good people to suffer with. Overall, please do not go to this school, save your money. And it has an ugly uniform anyways.
